The first day of unofficial low carb dieting doesn't seem to have done much for my blood sugar; certainly not the drastic change the book suggested. But then I'm not going by the book yet either.

Fasting: 135.
Before lunch (2 hours after breakfast): 130.
2 hours after lunch: 110.
Before dinner (6.5 hours after lunch): 98.
2 hours after dinner: 138.

This morning: 135 :(

I was surprised to find that my before-lunch reading, which had previously been the day's low, was not even close. Fasting should be the low and I'm a bit flummoxed that it's practically the high.

Breakfast was 2 scrambled eggs, slice of cheese, one slice of toast with peanut butter, a little I-Can't-Believe-It's-Supposed-To-Taste-Like-Butter.

Lunch was stuff from a chinese buffet, and by the numbers it did me good. Mostly chicken dishes, (none heavily breaded), some green beans and a salad.

Dinner was a salad with feta cheese, 1/4 (2 servings) of a Hickory Farms Beef Stick, and one of those low-carb bars (note: Lemon Chiffon Advantage bars are fairly disgusting). The Beef Stick was a bad choice I think, twice as much fat as protein. I blame D&D. ;)

Anyway, continuing to try today. I left my groceries at work last night so I'll be breakfasting there... hooray for the microwave.

...and speaking of D&D. 3.5 conversion is imminent for our groups. In Jeff's campaign, Zoj is going to be rid of his cohort Hrothgar, and so I've decided Marabi or whoever replaces her needs to be a bit more tanklike.

Which should mean a Dwarf in heavy armor and tower shield -- but the two-handed weapons, and pairs of light weapons, are just too interesting for that. I think I'm going to play the spiked chain wielder that I've always threatened to. :)

Doesn't the human body turn fat into glucose when you haven't eaten in awhile? I don't really remember (it's been awhile since I've learned that sort of thing), but maybe that's why you have such high blood sugar in the morning.

If that's the reason, then I think it would probably be a good idea to maybe eat some low carb foods before you goto sleep so that your body isn't making glucose during the night, which would bring up your blood sugar in the morning.

Or maybe that's just something I made up in my head (which sometimes happens), I can't be certain. :)

Not quite... glucagon (the opposite hormone from insulin) is supposed to turn fat into ketones when blood sugar is low.

I'll be looking for an answer to this online, I'm sure there's some kind of explanation. It may not keep happening though, I hope :)

Aha... it's called "Dawn Phenomenon." The liver (not knowing that the pancreas is broken) produces glucose in the morning to wake you up, and just keeps doing it until you eat something.

Which means that my baseline level isn't really as high as the fasting numbers I'm getting, and that I should eat breakfast sooner (and probably wake up earlier) to reduce this.

Cool. :)

Okay, well I was close... Sort of. :)

...or it may be Somogyi Effect, aka rebound, blood glucose spiking like mad if it falls too low. Which is pretty much like you said. ;) Which would mean I should indeed snack on something right before bed.

Either way, testing at night is the recommended thing. If it's super low it's probably Somogyi. If it's normal it's probably Dawn Phenomenon. If it's high it could be the medication wearing off.
